Culture, language, food and customs is a great part of my identity and my process of belonging. Napoletane plastica is a significant item in Sicilian culture. It is a set of playing cards with unique illustrations and vibrant colours. Growing up surrounded by Italian elderly men who would gather in groups to play these cards holds significant importance to identity. It was more than a game it was a way of bringing Italian culture to Australia and creating permanence of heritage. By using a black and white colour palette and charcoal on Aquarelle water colour paper, the removal of colour creates a permanent aspect of the image and icon, creating an artefact. This piece creates both questions amongst those who have not been immersed with this culturally significant piece and a kinship with those who have.
